The Connecticut Port Authority recently launched the Maritime Education Networking and Training Opportunity for Residents Sponsorship Program (“MENTOR-Futures”), a new initiative designed to expand access to meaningful maritime education opportunities for students across Connecticut. Through MENTOR-Futures, the Port Authority will provide financial support to eligible organizations serving PreK-12 students, helping connect young people with hands-on experiences that foster awareness, understanding, and interest in Connecticut’s maritime industry.

As Connecticut’s maritime sector continues to play a vital role in the state’s economy, MENTOR-Futures aims to inspire the next generation of maritime professionals by supporting educational programs that bring students closer to the industry. The program invests in experiences that educate, engage, and expose students to maritime careers, environmental stewardship, port operations, vessel activity, marine science, and other maritime-related fields.

Eligible applicants include schools, after-school programs, summer camps, museums, aquariums, environmental education organizations, nonprofits serving youth, and community-based organizations that provide programming for Connecticut students. Funding may be used to support a variety of activities, including field trips, classroom projects, workshops, guest speakers, career exploration opportunities, camps, and other innovative maritime learning experiences.

Organizations may request funding to cover costs such as transportation, program fees, educational materials and equipment, student scholarships, and guest speaker fees. They may submit more than one application per year, up to an aggregate limit of $5,000 per organization.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling, bi-monthly basis and considered on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to available funding. Funding decisions will be announced by the 15th of the month following each review cycle. Following completion of funded activities, recipients will be asked to provide a brief report highlighting program outcomes and student impact.
